TURNER — An Androscoggin County Sheriff’s deputy was hospitalized early Saturday morning after a police chase led to a car crash and then to a shootout on Route 4.
A sheriff’s official said the deputy was hospitalized but was expected to survive his injuries. A LifeFlight helicopter was called to transport another patient from the scene.
Details about the incident were scant. Witnesses said a vehicle crashed in the area of Routes 4 and 117 following a police chase about midnight.
As police arrived at the scene of the crash, they were shot at, witnesses said. Police returned fire and reportedly struck the shooter.
Androscoggin County Sheriff Eric Samson confirmed about 1:30 a.m. that authorities were investigating an officer-involved shooting.
No other details were available Saturday afternoon. Maine State Police are expected to join the investigation.
