The University of Maine jumped out to a three-goal lead in the first period but couldn’t hang on and skated to a 4-4 tie against Quinnipiac in a non-conference men’s college hockey game Friday in Hamden, Connecticut.
William Gerrior, Owen Fowler and Miguel Marques scored in the first period to give Maine (2-0-1) a 3-0 lead. Ethan Wyttenbach pulled Quinnipiac (2-1-1) within two when he scored 14 seconds into the second period, but Thomas Freel pushed it back to a three-goal lead eight minutes later.
After a goal by Marcus Vidicek made it 4-2, Elliott Groenewold and Jeremy Wilmer scored in the third period to force overtime.
Albin Boija made 35 saves for Maine, while Quinnipiac’s Matej Marinov stopped 18 shots.
Quinnpiac won the shootout, 1-0.
