A woman was killed early Monday after driving her vehicle off Interstate 95 into the median and striking a tree in Pittsfield.
Rae Hartford, 56, of Scarborough, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Maine State Police responded to mile marker 143 on I-95 at 5:55 a.m., where Hartford’s 2012 Subaru Impreza was found, Shannon Moss, public information officer at the Maine Department of Public Safety, said in a news release.
One lane of traffic was closed for two hours, Moss said.
Moss said the preliminary investigation indicates speed and intoxication are considered to be likely factors in the crash. The investigation is ongoing.
Anyone with additional information is asked to call Trooper Klayton Peckham at 207-973-3700, Ext. 9.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
