A man identified as the driver in a fatal single-car crash at about 7 a.m. Tuesday on Interstate 95 in Clinton “fled the scene and is wanted for questioning,” Clinton police said.

The man, driving a 2025 GMC Savana rental van, veered off of the northbound lanes of I-95 near mile marker 138, entered the median ditch area and went airborne, striking a tree, investigators found.

Upong arriving at the scene, Maine State Police troopers found an injured passenger in the vehicle and began life-saving measures. The passenger, whose identity is being withheld while police notify next of kin, was transported to a hospital but later died of their injuries, Aaron Turcotte, troop commander of Maine State Police Central Field Troop, said in a news release.

Witnesses at the scene told troopers that a man fled into the woods before police arrived. He was described as having injuries to his face, wearing a dark hoodie and carrying a dark backpack.

Police searched “most of the day” with support from the state police K-9 unit and the state’s fleet of two small airplanes, but the man has yet to be located, Turcotte said.

Mike Conners, the public information officer for the Clinton Police Department, said people who see a person matching this description in the area should not approach and should call 911.

Clinton police established a heavy presence Tuesday looking for the runaway man on Hinckley Road and Bellsqueeze Road, near the interstate, Conners, said in a Facebook post. Troopers also closed the passing lane on the northbound side of I-95 for several hours Tuesday morning.

A shelter-in-place order was not issued, but Clinton police said Tuesday morning that “it would be wise to stay inside and keep kids inside and doors locked, if possible.”

State police asked anyone with information about the crash or the driver to contact their Bangor office at 207-973-3700.
