A 75-year-old man died Monday in a fire at his Cambridge home, fire officials said.
Fire investigators were called to assist around 5 p.m. Monday at the request of the Cambridge Fire Department, the Office of State Fire Marshal said in a statement Tuesday.
Crews had responded to the blaze at 133 Andrew Ham Road and found who they believed to be the homeowner, Stuart Howe, 75, dead inside, the fire marshal’s office said.
The Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta was expected to perform an autopsy and confirm the identification of Howe.
The fire marshal’s office, meanwhile, was continuing to investigate the fire’s cause.
Firefighters from Cambridge, Sangerville and Harmony responded to the blaze, according to the fire marshal’s office. An excavator was also brought to the scene to aid their efforts.
“They battled cold weather and slippery conditions to extinguish the fire,” the office said.
