They also found a severely burned man, the younger Crane, in the road near the home. He had apparently escaped the fire. Before he was taken by ambulance to MaineGeneral Medical Center, he said a person was inside the home. He was later taken via LifeFlight of Maine to the Portland hospital.
Several area fire departments and ambulances responded, and six investigators from of the Office of State Fire Marshal were deployed.
On Tuesday, fire investigators recovered a body, which was taken to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta.
Lindsey Chasteen, director of operations for the Office of Chief Medical Examiner, said the office is working to scientifically identify the victim, and it’s too soon to know the cause and manner of death.
