A fire destroyed a couple’s home Monday morning at 17 Pelican Drive in Litchfield.

The couple was able to make it out of their burning home after being alerted by their cat. Unfortunately, authorities suspect the cat did not make it out of the burning home.

Firefighters were called to the home after the residents reported the fire, around 2:30 a.m.. The couple living there were awakened by their cat, according to Litchfield Fire Chief Michael Sherman. They escaped the flames and called for help from a neighbor’s home.

The homeowners were uninjured.

Sherman said the home was fully involved when firefighters arrived on scene.

Sherman declined to release the names of the homeowners. Town tax records indicate 17 Pelican Drive is owned by Stacey and Donald Vannah.

Pelican Drive is a dirt road that extends into Little Purgatory Pond from Whippoorwill Road, near Woodbury Pond, where firefighters pulled water to extinguish the fire.

Firefighting conditions were made more difficult by freezing rain making footing and travel treacherous. Sherman said Litchfield Public Works came to the site to spread sand to help firefighters gain traction. Two firefighters sustained minor injuries, including cuts, while fighting the fire.

“It was fully involved upon arrival,” Sherman said. “Unfortunately there wasn’t much to do, apart from extinguishment.”

Firefighters responded from Litchfield, Monmouth, West Gardiner, Gardiner, Sabattus and Wales, and police from Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office and Gardiner police assisted with traffic.

Sherman believed the year-round home is insured. He added the couple had a place to stay, with family nearby.

Sherman said it appears a wood stove caused the fire, though the cause was still under investigation Monday.

Firefighters were on the scene until around 7 a.m.
