Friday is typically a busy night for Portland restaurants, but many of them — along with bookstores, clothing stores, coffee shops and other businesses around the state — have decided to close for the day as part of a national strike meant to oppose the recent Immigrant and Customs Enforcement surge, which has been focused in Maine this month.
Many of their employees plan to participate in a protest at 3 p.m. Friday in Portland’s Monument Square. Other businesses that are staying open are donating sales to organizations that support the immigrant community.
The strike, organized at NationalShutdown.us, is billed as “ICE OUT! Nationwide Shutdown! No work. No school. No shopping.” It aims to get the attention of political leaders by disrupting the economy and show support for immigrants, many of whom in Maine have stayed home from work in the past week out of fear of being detained.
