The young family who lived across the street disappeared three weeks ago. I miss them. And now, I am afraid, as I just realized they may have left so suddenly fleeing from ICE. They are a biracial couple; she is American and white, he, not. Their son is 3.
All these years, I have enjoyed seeing them, carrying their son as a baby, placing him carefully in the back seat of the car. Later, watching him take his first steps on the apron of lawn out front. At Christmas this year, their son was in a shiny new child’s car. His parents stood in wonder on either side of him, as he earnestly pedaled and steered in a small, safe area.
I don’t know where this family has gone. But I am heartbroken that agents of the United States government are arresting, jailing and deporting people just like them.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
