A 15-year-old has been charged in connection with a bomb threat that led to the evacuation of a Fort Kent high school and middle school building last week.
The Fort Kent Police Department announced in a social media post Wednesday that the Fort Kent Community High School student was charged with making a false public report and terrorizing. They have since been released to a parent, the department said.
First responders arrived at the Fort Kent Community High School and Valley Rivers Middle School around 9:35 a.m. on Feb. 24 following a report of a handwritten note found in a bathroom stating there was a bomb in the school, Fort Kent police Chief Michael DeLena said in a news release that afternoon.
The school building was evacuated, but law enforcement, along with a school faculty member and maintenance staff, conducted a search and determined it was safe, DeLena said.
In a Feb. 24 letter to families of Maine School Administrative District 27, which includes Fort Kent and surrounding communities, Superintendent Benjamin Sirois said that students were able to return to collect their belongings and vehicles after the building was cleared. Classes resumed the following day.
