I have always supported Gov. Janet Mills. I can’t, however, support her in the race against Sen. Susan Collins. Mills will be 79 when she enters the Senate — a second term at 85 and finishing at 91. Mills will not pull Republican votes, or a substantial number of independents. I believe, however, that Graham Platner can do that.

Platner supports universal health care, women’s right to choose, working Mainers, environmental protections and government beholden to regular people rather than billionaires. He recognizes that Maine’s working class can no longer work one job, own a house, feed a family, send children to college or afford health care. Many have lost the ability to do that with two incomes. Platner speaks of an America with enough money for working citizens to have one job, afford a home, food, medical care and still have time for family and neighbors.

I’m in the over-60 group that seems reluctant to support Platner. Maybe because we were fortunate to have lived when one job paid bills and still allowed saving for retirement. Therefore, it’s comfortable to support a candidate who is “safe.” This has not served us well.

While I will probably be OK, my children are not and my grandchildren certainly won’t be. This planet will not be OK. The divide between the haves and have nots will increase. Health insurance and medical care, already cost prohibitive, will become unattainable. It’s time for a change. I support Graham and urge others to do the same.
