Xander Lamppa scored two goals in a five-goal second period as the Maine Mariners routed the Greensboro Gargoyles 6-0 on Sunday at Cross Insurance Arena and clinch a spot in the ECHL Kelly Cup Playoffs. The win gave Maine a sweep of the teams’ two-game series.
The win, combined with Trois-Rivieres’ 3-2 overtime loss at Wichita, put the Mariners (38-16-6-2) in the playoffs for the fourth time in five seasons.
Ryan Orgel (one goal, three assists) and Linus Hemstrom (four assists) paced the Mariners with four points each. Robert Cronin, Jacob Hudson and Ben Allison also scored for Maine, which netted three power-play goals in the second.
Mariners goalie Luke Cavallin made 16 saves to earn his second straight shutout.
The Mariners play their next four games are against the Trois-Rivieres Lions, starting Wednesday at home.
