A New Hampshire man died late Tuesday night in a crash on Interstate 95 in Newport.
Maine State Police received several reports just before midnight Tuesday that a vehicle was stopped in the northbound travel lane of I-95 near mile marker 157, according to a news release. While troopers were responding to those calls, they received another report that the vehicle had been hit by a tractor trailer.
Juan Guallpa, 33, from Lempster, New Hampshire, was found dead at the scene. His 2013 Chevrolet Volt was hit by a 2021 Freightliner and both vehicles entered the median.
The tractor trailer rolled onto its passenger side and into both southbound lanes. The driver was brought to the hospital with minor injuries.
Police say investigators are unsure why Guallpa’s vehicle was stopped. People with information related to the crash should call Trooper Joshua Staples at 207-973-3700, extension 9, according to Maine State Police.
Lanes on both the northbound and southbound sides of I-95 were shut down after the crash. The northbound lanes were reopened at 3 a.m. Wednesday.
Southbound traffic was reduced to one lane as crews worked to clean up and remove the tractor trailer. Both lanes were reopened around 3:30 p.m.
