A new scam is targeting registered sex offenders in Maine.
The Maine State Police warned of the scam in a social media post Wednesday, sharing an image of a letter claiming to be from the “Maine Probation Tonduary.”
No such entity exists, and “tonduary” doesn’t even appear to be a word in the English language.
The letter claims a data migration error in a records management system has required them to request personal information, state police said.
According to an example provided by state police, the letters request targets send their phone number, electric bill (to prove residency), driver’s license, Social Security card and passport to an email account that is not an official Maine state address.
Maine State Police reminded individuals that neither the Maine Sex Offender Registry nor the Maine Department of Corrections would ask an individual to send such sensitive information via email.
Those who receive the letter are directed to report the incident to the Sex Offender Registry or local law enforcement.
