School vacation is just a week away — have you made plans for the days off from school yet? If you’re still looking, here are a few ideas that include camps, hands‑on activities, and outdoor excursions to keep kids (and parents) entertained and engaged all week long.

April Artist + Maker Camp

Kids ages 8-12 can spend the week, April 20-24, making and creating.

Activities are planned from 9 a.m. to noon at the Ticonic Classroom, 93 Main St., Waterville.

There will be a variety of artists, materials, techniques, ideas and inspiration.

Musical theater workshops 

Jump into acting this April vacation with a fun, beginner‑friendly workshop series for children 8 to 12 years old April 20 and 21 at Skowhegan Opera House, 225 Water St., Skowhegan.

The free workshops will be led by Broadway performer Michelle Bruckner, who made her Broadway debut in “Chicago, The Musical” and has spent more than 25 years performing globally with roles in film and television as well.

She currently serves as theater director at Berkshire Lake Arts Camp in Hinsdale, Massachusetts, and teaches at both the Portsmouth School of Ballet and the American Music and Drama Academy in New York City.

Students can sign up for one or all workshops, exploring improv, movement, monologues, and scene work in a fun, supportive environment designed especially for new performers perfect for anyone curious about acting or stepping onstage for the first time.

Anah Shrine Circus

Anah Shrine Circus performances are planned for April 24-26 at Cross Insurance Center, 515 Main St., Bangor.

Show times are set for 3 and 7 p.m. Friday, April 24; 10 a.m., 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday, April 25; and 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Sunday, April 26.

Children’s Discovery Museum of Central Maine

The Children’s Discovery Museum of Central Maine offers April Vacation Camp Monday through Friday, April 20-24, at 7 Eustis Parkway in Waterville.

The half-day camp, ideal for children 4-7 years old, focuses on art, science, movement and open-ended play on the schedule every day.

Cost is $125 for the week or $30 per day; childrensdiscoverymuseum.org.

Day excursions

Central Maine offers a wealth of kid‑friendly outdoor day excursions, from gentle riverside paths to short wooded loops and easy‑access nature preserves. Here are several hiking spots in the region well suited for families with children; many are also great spots for a picnic.

Viles Arboretum at 153 Hospital St. in Augusta has easy, shaded trails, interpretive signs and educational plants and is stroller‑friendly in parts.

• The Kennebec River Rail Trail is a paved, mostly flat rail‑trail along the Kennebec River; suitable for little legs, bikes and strollers and open dawn to dusk. The trails are accessible from Capitol Park in Augusta; Waterfront Park on Water Street, Augusta; Riverfront Park in Hallowell; Kennebec Bike & Ski, 357 Maine Ave. in Farmingdale; Pine Hill Drive, Bowman Street and Sheldon Street in Farmingdale; and Church Street and Maine Avenue in Gardiner.

Vaughan Woods State Park has access points on Litchfield Road and Middle Street in Hallowell. The short, loop‑style trail features stone bridges, a small falls and a wildflower meadow. It is frequently recommended as a great place to hike with children.

Quarry Road Trails at 300 Quarry Road in Waterville has a network of trails varying in lengths and difficulty. Many loops are short and easy enough for older children; the area is also a popular spot for families and dog‑owners.

Good Will‑Hinckley wooded trails in the Fairfield area offer a network of mostly flat trails through woods and wetlands. Stone monuments can be found throughout the trail system and families can also explore forest habitats and do some bird‑watching. The trails are accessible at 14 Easler Road.
