Mackenzie Holmes of Gorham is headed back to Seattle — after a winter basketball journey that took her to Australia and China.
The Seattle Storm of the WNBA announced Saturday that Holmes, 25, has signed a contract. Coming out of Indiana University as a multi-time All-American, the 6-foot-3 Holmes was a third-round pick of the Storm (26th overall) in 2024. She missed her rookie season because of knee surgery.
In 2025, Holmes was released by the Storm following training camp, then re-signed in June. She appeared in 10 games (plus once in the postseason) for Seattle, averaging 5.8 minutes per game, scoring a total of 10 points.
The Storm are reportedly losing two of their top forwards to free agency. Ten-time WNBA All-Star Nneka Ogwumike, 35, returned to the Los Angeles Sparks, where she starred for 12 seasons before joining Seattle. In addition, Gabby Williams, who averaged a career-high 11.2 points for Seattle, signed with the Golden State Valkyries on Sunday. Her departure had been expected.
Seattle opens its regular season May 8.
Holmes, who starred at Gorham High, has had a busy basketball winter.
From September to February, Holmes played for Geelong Venom of the Women’s National Basektball League in Australia. Over the 23-game season, Holmes averaged 21.9 points (second in the league) and 9.6 rebounds (fourth) while making 57.5% of her shots and earning all-WNBL first-team honors.
Holmes then had a brief stay in the Women’s Chinese Basketball Association, joining Henan Phoenix for a four-game playoff stretch. Holmes averaged 8.5 points and 7.3 rebounds in 15 minutes per game for Henan.
