SIDNEY – Roxy Ann Getchell, 81, of Sidney, passed away surrounded by her loving family on April 10, 2026, at Maine Medical Center. She was born on Dec. 3, 1944, in Providence, Rhode Island, to Percy and Iona Steward. She was raised and educated in Skowhegan.
She was briefly married, her unions resulting in three daughters that she raised mostly alone. She was fiercely independent and raised her daughters to be as well. In the early 1980’s, Roxy was hired by Digital Equipment Corporation and spent nearly 20 years travelling all over the world in her position. During this time, she learned to quilt as a hobby, finding such joy in being creative.
When she was 50, she met the love of her life and when at 55 she found herself downsized at work, she decided to turn her passion for quilting into her new career and launched Mystic Maine Quilts in Chelsea, where she worked six or seven days a week for 26 years until her recent sudden illness.
Her impact on the quilting community has helped generations of quilters hone their craft and she will be greatly missed. The love of her craft was only eclipsed by the love and pride of her family.
She is survived by her mother Iona of Waterville; her partner Kevin McMurray of Sidney; her daughters, Lisa York-Lemelin of Belgrade, Robyn Harwood of Belfast, Stacie Knowles and her husband Joseph of Albion; her granddaughters, Brandy Bean of Sabattus, Katy Lemelin of Belgrade, Abigail Knowles of Albion, Kasandra Knowles of Skowhegan; her sister Nancy Poulin of Oakland; brother Terry Steward of Canaan; nieces, a nephew and many cousins. She was predeceased by her father Percy; and her son-in-law, Jay Lemelin.
A celebration of life will be held at the Augusta Elks Club on May 24, 2026, at 1 p.m. We invite anyone who has received a quilt or help with a quilt from Roxy to bring them as a tribute.
