1. Maranacook/Winthrop
Coach Zach Stewart said the Black Bears are excited to get the season going, and coming off the program’s first state championship, it’s no wonder. The team returns eight of the 11 starters from last season’s Class C title-winning squad, including Stella Stewart (40 goals, 31 assists in 2025), who scored with 7.1 seconds left to beat Traip Academy, 10-9, in the state final. Alice Ferran (43 goals) and Mya St. Pierre (22 goals, 12 assists) also return to the offense. Coach Stewart calls Cooper Davis the team’s human stat line, coming off a season in which she scored 27 goals, had 13 assists, forced 45 turnovers and grabbed 114 ground balls. Defensively, the Black Bears are bolstered by the return of goalie Willow Woodford, along with defenders Hadley Farwell, Reagan Dwelly, Kayla Dubois and Eve Simcock. The Black Bears will continue to play an up-tempo game with pressure defense.
2. Cony
The Rams earned the No. 3 seed in the Class B playoffs and reached the quarterfinals last season. With 10 starters returning, they are poised to again be among the top teams in Class B. Midfielder Gabby Vachon was Cony’s top scorer as a freshman last season and also led the team in ground balls and was second in draw controls. Casey Monson, a senior, returns to the attack, while Katie Morin is back in the midfield. Other players who can provide offense are Katelynn Dutil, Paige Logan and Rylin Miller. In goal, Avery Maxim is in her third year as Cony’s starter, and coach Gretchen Livingston said Maxim put in a lot of time in the offseason to improve her overall game. In front of Maxim is a veteran defense, including Rhya Turner, Ashley Olson, Elle Leeman and Helen Dineen. Livingston said freshman Kennedy Dube could be an impact player as well.
3. Messalonskee
The Eagles return 12 players who saw a lot of varsity time last season — seven seniors and five juniors. Senior Chloe Massie will once again be counted on to lead Messalonskee’s offense after netting 69 goals last season. The Eagles also have leadership in goal with senior AJ Pettengill. Both Pettingill and Massie plan to continue playing lacrosse and field hockey together next year at St. Joseph’s College. Coach Cora Clukey said Messalonskee has solid defenders in Cailyn Henning and newcomer Abby Tidwell. Sophie Ventimiglia, Rylee McKay and Grace McKay could also emerge as key players for the Eagles, who will look to move past the Class B quarterfinals.
