The Maine Legislature hammered out a good bill (LD 307) to put huge data centers on hold until they could be studied by the Legislature. Energy and water consumption have caused significant difficulties in other states that have not developed standards for these gigantic facilities that are outsized users of public resources.
It is rumored that Gov. Janet Mills may veto that bill, even though LD 307 is in the best interest of Maine’s climate policies (when it comes to energy and water consumption), supports the democratic process and protects Maine jobs.
Data centers are not required by Mainers. Data centers are just another way of colonizing Maine for big-business interests that have no concern about our iconic environmental assets, nor will they provide for our future. Data centers are proposed here because there is a huge (billions of dollars) effort by private equity to cash in on our state. We have not given adequate oversight to these deals to date, leading to quick deals like the one in Jay.
Please urge Gov. Mills to sign LD 307 into law.
