Chad Epperson, the winningest manager in Portland Sea Dogs history, will become the interim third-base coach for the Boston Red Sox after an organizational shakeup on Saturday.
The Red Sox fired manager Alex Cora and five other staff members on Saturday after a 10-17 start.
Epperson was in the his fifth season with the Sea Dogs, who are 10-9 after a 4-3 win over the Hartford Yard Goats on Saturday. Epperson is 300-266 with Portland. Previously, he was the catching coordinator for the Red Sox for 12 season.
Epperson takes over for Kyle Hudson. Others let go Saturday were hitting coach Peter Fatse, bench coach Ramón Vázquez, assistant hitting coach Dillon Lawson, and major league hitting strategy coach Joe Cronin of Scarborough.
Epperson passes Arnie Beyeler as the Sea Dogs winningest manager on Aug. 23, 2025. Beyeler went 282-283 from 2007-2010.
Epperson played eight seasons in the minor leagues before beginning his managing career in 2001 with the independent Cook County Cheetahs of the Frontier League. He spent eight seasons as a manager or coach in the Red Sox minor league system before spending 12 years as their catching coordinator. He was named Sea Dogs manager in Feb. 2022.
