George Hartley Curtis III
AUGUSTA – George Hartley Curtis III, 84, passed away peacefully at home on Jan. 15, 2026, after a short illness, with his wife Rosalie by his side. He was born Dec. 3, 1941.
George served four years in the United States Air Force, stationed at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada. He later owned and operated Ashland Auto Repair in San Leandro, Calif. for 12 years and became a Master Mason with Masonic Lodge #218 in Livermore in 1979. After returning to Maine 25 years ago, he worked for Gardiner Public Works until his retirement.
George loved gardening with his wife, woodworking, restoring old furniture, and tinkering in his workshop. He rebuilt vintage automobiles with his sons and enjoyed feeding wild birds year-round—always finding creative ways to outsmart the squirrels.
A devoted Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots fan, he rarely missed a game and especially loved watching the Red Sox with Rosalie. He also adored his cats, Sheiva and Lucy, and was known for his good-natured teasing.
He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Rosalie Curtis; children Michael Curtis (Donna), Robert Curtis (Rhonda), Amanda Herr (Bradley), and Evan Nedik; grandchildren Trevor, Tylor, Rachel, Lauren, and Brett Curtis; great-grandchildren Hartley and Estella Curtis; and nephew John Dupont (Stephany). He is also survived by siblings Edward Curtis and Pauline Webb.
George will be remembered for his steady presence, skilled hands, gentle humor, and the simple, shared joys of a life well lived.
