As I look at the crowded field of candidates for governor, I ask myself: What is the most important attribute for the individual who will best serve all of the citizens of Maine? What does our next governor need to provide to reach Democrats, Republicans or independents? What same qualification should the people in populated southern Maine or rural northern Maine demand from our next governor? What is the one quality that people across the political spectrum, from the far right to the moderate center, to the progressive left, expect?
The answer: Trust.
Trust is the one quality that is only earned over time. Trust isn’t found. Trust can’t be purchased online or bought at a store. Trust can’t be inherited or gifted to someone. For me, there is only one candidate running for governor who has earned the trust of all citizens, Nirav Shah.
During the most stressful period of my life, while worrying about even opening the door to my home to receive groceries being delivered or sitting next to a stranger in a doctor’s office, I learned to rely on the honest, direct and informed advice from Dr. Shah. I trusted him then and I trust him now. As a doctor, a lawyer, an economist, but most of all as a leader, he earned it. His documented plans and programs demonstrate that leadership.
