Shawn Element redirected a Jaxson Bellamy shot with 7:11 remaining Wednesday night, helping the Maine Mariners stifle an Adirondack comeback on the way to a 5-2 victory over the Thunder in Game 3 of an ECHL first-round playoff series at Glens Falls, New York.
The victory gave Maine a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven series, with games set for Friday and Saturday nights in Glens Falls. The series will return to Portland for games next Tuesday and Wednesday, if necessary.
The Mariners scored the first three goals, by Antonio Venuto, Ty Cheveldayoff and Linus Hemstrom, and were in command with 14:20 left in the second period. But the Thunder countered with a goal midway through the second, then another early in the third to pull within 3-2.
Element’s goal provided breathing room, and Max Andreev scored into an empty net with 57 seconds remaining.
Maine dominated, compiling a 41-18 advantage in shots.
