The Portland Sea Dogs broke a tie with a three-run seventh inning, then held on to defeat the Somerset Patriots 6-5 in the second game of a doubleheader Wednesday in Bridgewater, New Jersey.
Somerset (9-14) took control early in the opener and cruised to a 13-1 victory against the Sea Dogs (12-11). The doubleheader included a makeup game from an April 5 postponement.
The Sea Dogs got to Gerrit Cole of the New York Yankees, making a rehab start, for three runs on three hits in 5 2/3 innings. Johanfran Garcia hit his first Double-A home run — a two-run blast — in the fourth inning.
Cole threw 60 pitches and struck out two, with no walks.
Portland scored three in the seven to break a 3-3 tie on RBI doubles by Max Ferguson, Will Turner and Tyler McDonough. Reidis Sena allowed a two-run homer in the bottom of the inning but collected his first save.
In the first game, Somerset scored in five of its six at-bats, built a 10-1 lead in the fourth and wasn’t threatened. Turner’s solo homer was one of Portland’s four hits.
