Recently, more than one letter to the editor has implied that there are only two Democratic candidates running to contest Sen. Susan Collins in the fall election. I was particularly disturbed by an April 11 letter from Lawrence Kaplan, MDS, “Pull back the curtain on Graham Platner.”
To quote Mr. Kaplan, “As a card-carrying Democrat for 62 years, I would have preferred an experienced alternative to Gov. Janet Mills to run against Sen. Susan Collins.”
Well, guess what? There is another candidate with wide government experience running in the primary, though one would never know that based on this newspaper’s coverage.
David Costello deserves to be given the same coverage that other, better-known candidates are getting. With 30 years of government experience in Maryland and Maine, and several years with USAID, he is certainly qualified to run. He advocates for progressive reforms, such as campaign finance reform and expanding healthcare access.
It is a dereliction of duty on the part of this publication that this fully qualified individual is being ignored. When you choose to cover only certain candidates, you are not giving us the whole truth, but in fact are making choices for us.
You are supposed to keep your readers — the citizens who will be going to the polls — well-informed. You are failing in this and therefore failing our democracy. Shame!
