PORTLAND โ€” It had been 49 days since the Portland Hearts of Pine won a game.

Saturday they snapped that unsatisfying streak with authority, beating the New York Comsos, 3-1, behind two goals from Ollie Wright and an icebreaker from JayTee Kamara.

It was Portlandโ€™s second win of the season. The other came in the USL League One season opener against the Cosmos, also by a 3-1 score, on March 14 in Patterson, New Jersey.

โ€œIt was definitely on our minds knowing that weโ€™d only won once before today,โ€ said captain Mikey Lopez. โ€œWe knew that we needed to come out strong and fighting because the people here deserve a win and deserve a good performance from the team.โ€

Portland improved to 2-1-3 in league play in front of an announced crowd of 6,162 fans on a cool evening that stayed dry despite overcast skies. The Comsos are 2-4-1 and have allowed a league-worst 16 goals.

โ€œTo get three points in front of these fans is massive. I feel it can kind of kick-start the season,โ€ Wright said.

The Hearts of Pine will depart Tuesday for a two-game Midwestern swing. Portland plays expansion squad Fort Wayne FC on Wednesday and then will be at Union Omaha in Nebraska on Saturday.

Wearing their hunterโ€™s orange and black Blaze kit for the first time this season, the Hearts (now 2-1 in the alternative attire) came out with immediate energy and played their best half of the season. Consistently putting the pressure on New York, Portland outshot the Cosmos 13-2 in the first half (24-11 for the game), forcing bad passes and most importantly capitalizing with brilliant goals from Kamara in the 11th minute and Wright in the 18th.

โ€œItโ€™s what we needed, for sure. And I think, what we needed and what felt sort of on brand makes it even better,โ€ said Portland coach Bobby Murphy.

Kamara, the fancy dribbling 5-foot-3 wing from Sierra Leone, worked right-to-left to get some space and blasted a shot into the top right third.

Wrightโ€™s goal might have topped Kamaraโ€™s on the highlight ranking. Running onto Kamaraโ€™s long slot pass from the other side of midfield, Wright was tripped by Cosmos defender William Noecker as he entered the 18-yard box but executed a forward roll and popped up quickly, saw the ball was right in front of him, and chipped a shot over Cosmos keeper Tristan Stephani.

โ€œI was happy with that one, to be truthful,โ€ Wright said.

Hearts had contributions across the field, showing they might be finding the elusive chemistry that has been lacking.

In the back, Josh Drack returned after missing a USL Cup game on April 25 because of a likely concussion in a 1-1 draw with FC Naples. He got into the offensive thrust and also teamed with Brecc Evans โ€” at his normal center back position aside Kemali Green โ€” to limit USL1 leading scorer Ajmeer Spengler to scant touches and one shot that was blocked by the defense.

Evans helped create Kamaraโ€™s goal with a long, precise field-switching ball from his end into the attacking zone. Evans said he could see that New York was shifting its attention toward Wright and Drack on Portlandโ€™s left wing, and that left Kamara and right back Mo Mohamed as outlets.

Lopez, who has been in and out of the lineup, got the start and was a ball-winning force, teaming with steady center midfielder Michel Poon-Angeron. They, along with Matteo Kidd, were key in creating a fast-paced forward push.

โ€œThis was a good foundation especially for the new guys who havenโ€™t seen what it is to be chaotic and putting pressure on the other team and having the stadium behind us as well,โ€ Lopez said.

The Hearts faithful also saw offseason acquisition Emiliano Terzaghi show flashes of why he is the all-time leading goal scorer in USL1. The 33-year-old Argentinian made several runs that New York had to cover, helping to create space and opportunity.

Wright scored his second goal four minutes into the second half, running onto another long Kamara pass and then working a stop-and-go to beat the last defender and send a shot into the opposite side.

New York entered the game second in USL1 with 11 goals, led by Spengler (five goals, three assists). Eventually the Cosmos did begin to work effectively in the final third and got on the board in the 83rd minute on a rebound goal from Sebastian Guenzatti after Portland keeper Hunter Morse (six saves) deflected a sharp header.

NOTES: Before the game, Masashi Wada was introduced to the crowd. Wada suffered a gruesome ankle injury in the home opener. He was on crutches and acknowledged the crowd. In the 77th minute, Dirigo Union supporters started a โ€œWada, Wada, Wadaโ€ chant (his uniform number is 77).
