Starting at 6 p.m. Friday, Route 27 at the Dresden/Wiscasset town line will be closed for two days for a culvert replacement project.
Traffic will be detoured via routes 1 and 127; motorists should expect significant delays, and the Maine Department of Transportation is encouraging drivers to plan ahead.
The project begins at the intersection of routes 1 and 27 in Wiscasset and ends at the intersection of routes 27 and 127 in Dresden. The physical closure will be at the Dresden and Wiscasset town line.
An aging 48-inch corrugated metal pipe, which is about 10 feet below the roadway, will be replaced by a 72-inch reinforced concrete pipe. To upgrade the culvert, a 50-foot-wide open-cut excavation is needed, and that requires a full road closure to ensure the safety of drivers and work crews.
The existing guardrail will be removed and reset.
The roadway is expected to be repaved by the end of the day Monday.
Message boards and detour signs will be in place to inform drivers of the detour.
Work on the $138,000 project is expected to be completed by the end of May; the contractor is Emery Lee & Sons Inc.
