Vicious and demented? An April 30 letter referred to “demented and vicious anti-Trumpers who have been lining our streets for months.”

Well. I am an 82-year-old grandmother who has been part of these demonstrations along streets and bridges in Maine. I’ve been protesting the actions of a president who I believe is undermining the constitutional protections we need to keep our democracy safe.

While it’s pretty obvious that I don’t agree with the letter writer, I’m not, to my knowledge, demented. And it seems very strange to be characterized as vicious. I’m just a person who disagrees with what our administration is doing. I feel it’s my right and duty to protest when I see harm being done to the country I love.

I protest the detention of immigrants who have done nothing wrong and an unauthorized war that has now cost us $75 billion, while prices rise and we cut assistance for our most vulnerable citizens. Also, the fact that family members, business associates and Trump himself have profited through actions that are against the law, and nobody seems to deal with this corruption, truly disturbs me.

So, yes, I do disagree with the letter writer, but my intent is to protect his rights as well as my own. In that respect, I really don’t think I’m demented or vicious. In fact, I would very much like to talk to him about why he thinks I am.
