It appalls me to see what has happened in the Democratic race to unseat Sen. Susan Collins.

It lifted me up to see a recent letter expressing indignation that the paper has been derelict in its civic responsibility by presenting this race as a two-person affair (“Coverage of Maine’s US Senate candidates has been incomplete,” April 30). Chuck Schumer handpicked Janet Mills; the media have decided that Graham Platner is dramatic enough to sell advertising, I guess.   

When Mills dropped out of the race, Platner canceled all his upcoming debates. He also sees himself as the presumptive nominee. Give me a break! The system is so corrupted by big money that it shuts out any candidate who is not propped up by substantial funding.

But wait! All along we have had another well-qualified Democratic candidate, a progressive who has broad experience in management both inside and outside of government. One of his major causes is campaign finance reform (imagine), and he also supports broadening healthcare access.

Check out David Costello’s website for a welcome alternative to the information blackout that we have experienced so far. Whoever said that the Democrats are pretty good at snatching defeat from the jaws of victory was on to something.
