Kyle Douin drove in four runs during a 10-run second inning, and the University of Southern Maine baseball team moved one win away from a Little East Conference title by defeating UMass Dartmouth 14-6 in a winners bracket game Friday in Gorham.
The top-seeded Huskies (29-10) fell behind 5-0 in the top of the first inning but quickly answered with two runs in the bottom of the first and 10 in the second.
USM has scored 35 runs in its first three games of the tournament. The Huskies will have two chances to claim the championship and an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament against Keene State on Saturday. The second-seeded Owls stayed alive by winning two elimination games Friday.
Peter Keblinsky started USM’s comeback with a two-run single in the first. Douin bookended the big second inning with a pair of two-run singles. The Huskies also drew four bases-loaded walks and scored on a wild pitch.
Douin finished 3 for 4 with five RBI. Keblinsky also had three hits and drove in three runs, and Kaiden Morin was 4 for 5.
USM pitcher Hayden Strout (6-1) settled down after his rough first inning and made it through the seventh. Kason Lewis and Sam Calder retired UMass Dartmouth in order in the eighth and ninth.
MITCHELL 18, ST. JOSEPH’S 5: Chas Terni Jr. slugged a grand slam to cap a five-run fourth inning that broke a 4-4 tie, and the Mariners (29-12) swept the Great Northeast Athletic Conference championship series against the Monks (34-13) in New London, Connecticut.
Terni finished with six RBI as Mitchell won its second conference title in three years and secured a berth in the NCAA Division III tournament. Eight of the nine starters in the Mariners’ lineup had at least two hits.
Nic Frink was 2 for 4 with a double, and RBI and two runs scored for St. Joseph’s. Nick Brindle also collected a single and a double.
