To: Karen Colby, RN, at MaineHealth Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, South Portland

From: Travis Adams

Karen is an amazing person. As an empty nester, she went back to school and earned her nursing license.

Karen’s first year as a nurse was 2020. During the pandemic, she provided care to dialysis patients. She currently cares for orthopedic patients.

Nursing is a tough job requiring a special person. Karen is strong, empathetic and respectful. She embodies all the traits needed to be a great nurse.

Karen has been my partner for over 10 years. As her partner, I have witnessed the tragedies, challenges, achievements and celebrations she has experienced throughout her career. She also balances her life to be a great partner, mother, daughter and friend.

Karen gives so much. She makes the world better. Thank you, Karen. I love you. You are awesome.

To: MaineGeneral Cardiac Rehabilitation Team at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Augusta

From: Just another appreciative cardio-rehab patient

A National Nurses Week “thank you” to the nurses at the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program at MaineGeneral’s Alfond Center for Health in Augusta.

What makes you so special?

During the intake and evaluation process, in addition to gathering the medical information you need, you make us feel welcome and professionally cared for but also cared about.

During the structured, three-times-a-week rehab sessions, you create a nonjudgmental, noncompetitive atmosphere where all feel welcome, while also providing the support, encouragement and reassurance to keep us coming back for the next session.

During the voluntary Phase III follow-up program, you continue to meet us where we are in our rehab efforts in a nonjudgmental manner that makes us want to continue our rehabilitation efforts. And your continued support, encouragement and motivation over the long term (sometimes literally for years), plus your encouragement of a relaxed, socially open environment, makes workouts more fun.

Some would argue that you are “just doing your job.” Your patients would tell them that it isn’t just “what” you do, but “the way you do it” that makes you remarkable.

In short, you make the cardio-rehabilitation gym a place we “want to be” instead of a place we “have to be” even when all of us “need to be” there.

Naming names here just creates an opportunity to overlook someone, so whether you are a full-time, part-time, floating, temporary or per diem nurse in this program, a “heartfelt” thank you for all that you do to make it special. Patients in this program couldn’t do it without you and your support, encouragement, motivation, teaching, coaching, assistance, caring and professionalism.

To: Megan, Allison, Emma and Katherine at Maine Medical Center ICU, Portland

From: Rebecca Miller

Our family would like to send our sincere and heartfelt thanks to the ICU nursing team, Megan, Allison, Emma and Katherine.

Our 44-year-old daughter, sister and mother of two children was admitted to Maine Medical Center earlier this year with acute liver failure after a recent Stage 4 metastatic breast cancer diagnosis in October, and she passed on Jan. 28.

The nurses who cared for her were so compassionate, kind and always answered all our questions honestly. If they didn’t have an answer right then, they would find the answer.

They took wonderful care of her and they cried with us.

They were very helpful and kind to our family as we tried to come to terms with what was happening and made sure we were comfortable.

We will never forget their caring and compassionate kindness during this very difficult and tragic time for our family. Thank you.

To: ICU Nurses at Mid Coast Hospital, Brunswick

From: Russell Pinizzotto

It’s impossible to choose one nurse out of the many who helped me through a rough time after being rushed to the hospital.

All of them were incredibly knowledgeable, helpful, compassionate, and just truly amazing.

They definitely had my interests foremost in their care of me during this time.

Thanks to all of you!

To: Nurses, CNAs and Support Staff at MaineGeneral Medical Center, 3rd Floor West

From: Karen Hamel

There aren’t enough words in the English language to express my gratitude for the outstanding care I got from each and every person who I came into contact with during my extended stay in the hospital in 2025.

All staff members who were involved in my recovery treated me with respect, compassion, endless care and support.

The dedication to your patients leaves me in awe of all of you.

During my stay I started having panic attacks. My nurse (didn’t matter whether it was day or night) would sit with me and help me get through it.

On a particularly busy night on the floor, I had one of these attacks and rang for my nurse. I apologized to her, since I knew it was so busy and she said to me “You are my only patient right now.”

It’s that kindness I saw from everyone I came into contact with.

We are so lucky, as a community, to have a professional, remarkable and genuine group of individuals to care for us during our time of need.

It’s because of all you did for me that I was able to get back to living a normal and productive life.

I am forever grateful.

To: Karen Morley at Maine Veterans’ Homes

From: Raymond Gallant

Karen Morley is my daughter and over the past year, she has taken care of me more than anyone else.

I have had two major cancer surgeries and three right hip operations. The third hip operation was the worst, and she had to transport me to Portland many times and take me around town for errands, bills and groceries.

She is just super great and I cannot thank her enough. She is a Med Tech and a great one if I have to say so myself.

She has been a nurse for well over 30 years, and it’s not an easy job as she had to even put herself through COVID.

Thanks, Daughter. Dad loves you.

To: Jayme Givens at MaineGeneral Medical Center

From: Gary David

Jayme is in nursing in remembrance of “Mimi,” her grandmother, who had a mental illness and pancreatic cancer.

She is motivated to be the best nurse possible.

To: The Cancer Care Team at Gibson 7, Maine Medical Center

From: Suzette Cloutier

Over the two and a half years my daughter was being treated for acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL), the oncology team nurses at Maine Medical Center CFT7 were always compassionate, caring and supportive, not only as individuals but as a team.

They worked hard to make her feel comfortable in the most uncomfortable of circumstances and to feel cared for.

These nurses are so hardworking. They are not only medical professionals but turn into housekeepers and wait staff to make their patients comfortable and safe.

They became like another family and grieved just as hard as we did when we lost her. Then they cared for us.

We couldn’t be more grateful for the countless hours spent with them and the support and encouragement they gave Bailey.

They are truly special people to be able to do what they do.

And a very special thanks to Barbara Gardner, RN, WOC. She has been my rock, helping me physically and emotionally with a cancer diagnosis and the effects of an aggressive chemotherapy treatment.

To: Sophie and CICU at Maine Medical Center

From: Jim B.

I got to know many of the CICU staff at Maine Med last October. Almost to a person, they were truly caring and sincere with my best interest at heart. Sophie was special. Her care was above and beyond what anyone could imagine!

21 days were a tough time, but they got me through it, and I’m so appreciative of their efforts. I owe them many, many thanks.

A most sincere and grateful thank you!

To: The Joint Replacement Team at Maine Medical Center

From: Elinor Connell

Dear Joint Replacement Team,

You each showed your commitment to your chosen career path and how it has impacted your life.

One of you had a remarkable story: “I got pregnant after having cancer”; another shared a personal experience: “I am recovering from ACL surgery”; and still another offered a kind word: “You’re my favorite patient!”

Your experiences helped me realize that we are all on the same journey called life.

The skill set you demonstrated created a TRUST and a BOND that lives on as I heal.

You all made me feel supported beyond measure. And you made me feel, well, “brand new.”

Sending all that love back to each of you.

To: Andwell Hospice Teams at Andwell Health

From: Sue Rossignol

My mom was accepted to home hospice through Andwell almost three years ago. How fortunate she was to have this health care team.

The nurses and CNAs who cared for her at home (Stacey, Jessica, Nicki and others) were outstanding.

Unfortunately, my mom recently and quickly declined, but Stacey and Nicki were right there with us and recognized she could no longer be cared for at home.

She was admitted to hospice inpatient care on M1 at CMMC immediately as no bed was available at the Hospice House.

The nursing staff there was equally as wonderful, very attentive to my mom’s needs as well as those of my sister and me.

A bed became available at the Hospice House the very next day, so mom was transferred. The transition was seamless and I can’t say enough about the kind, tender and wonderful care my mom received.

Several nurses and CNAs were involved with her care and I can’t remember all their names, but every interaction was amazing!

I was able to have several conversations with them as well as the nurse practitioners who helped me greatly to understand the process that my mom was going through.

Erin Stone, NP, and Tammy, RN, were particularly helpful. Nicki, CNA, who came to mom’s home weekly, came to see her at the end of her shift after she was admitted to the Hospice House.

She and Stacey truly felt like they had become a part of our family. I can’t say enough about what a wonderful opportunity it was to be involved with this organization.

My mom passed there, but because of these people, it happened comfortably and peacefully. We should all have such an opportunity at the end of life.

To: Jessica Rankin at Central Maine Medical Center, Lewiston

From: Eric Rodzen

My wife, Denise, spent several weeks on M4 at CMMC, and Jessica Rankin became her hero.

Jess would always have time to listen to any issue and find a way to solve it if she could.

She showed that she really cared about patient comfort and concerns.

From meds to pillows to blankets to food or drinks and everything else, Jess wanted Denise to be taken care of properly.

When she was working, I knew Denise would have a better day.

Denise spent Thanksgiving there, and when I walked in that day Jess told me to enjoy our visit.

When I got to the room, it had been rearranged to fit two recliners for us to watch TV together, and shortly after that, two Thanksgiving dinners arrived.

That’s the kind of extra effort Jess put in for us the whole time Denise was there.

Having her in the hospital for all that time was not easy for either of us, but Jess certainly made it better.

Enormous thanks from both of us to Jessica Rankin!

To: Shannah Gallagher at Maine Medical Center

From: Marilyn Erickson

My husband was admitted three times since the winter, from the ER to the heart unit on the fourth floor of Malone Tower.

I am very thankful to Shannah and her team: Meg, Sophie, Suzanne, Kiersten, Johanna and others. Shannah is very professional and supportive of us, and her team follows in her steps.

My husband was so well taken care of and came home singing the praises of all of his nurses. Thanks to all, he is on the mend!

We never know when we will need medical care, and our health is on a line held by caring medical staff.

We thank you all from the bottom of our hearts!!

To: RSU 16 Health Service Team at RSU 16

From: Amy Hediger

School nurses are often the quiet heroes of our schools, and we are incredibly grateful for the care and dedication they show every single day.

In RSU 16, we are fortunate to have an outstanding team — Lisa, Jessica, Laurie, Mary and our many dedicated substitute nurses — who go far beyond what many people might expect of a “nurse’s office.”

Our nurses are often the first to respond when a student isn’t feeling well, but they are also listening ears for students who are anxious, overwhelmed or just need a moment of calm.

They manage complex medical needs, administer medications and ensure that students with health plans are safe and supported throughout the school day.

They communicate with families, coordinate with physicians and help staff understand how to best support each child.

They are also educators, teaching students about healthy habits, supporting mental health and helping to create school environments where wellness is prioritized.

Perhaps most importantly, they do all of this with compassion.

They build trusting relationships with students and families, often becoming a steady and reassuring presence in a child’s day.

To Lisa, Jessica, Laurie, Mary and our substitute nurses: thank you. Your expertise, care and commitment make a difference that extends far beyond the health office.

Our schools are stronger, safer and more supportive places because of you.

To: Tina Swan at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center

This heartfelt note is to recognize my daughter, Kathleen Frost, RN, in the Mother-Baby Postpartum Care Unit at MMC.

To: The Nurses of InterMed

To the nurses of InterMed, with gratitude:

Here’s to the nurses who show up each day,
At InterMed’s side in the most meaningful way —
Who go far beyond what the exam room holds,
Whose impact on health is the greatest of gold.

To our primary care nurses, the first friendly face,
Who set every patient at ease in this place,
You follow up, check in and answer the call,
Making sure that no patient ever feels small.

To specialty care, with your focused expertise,
You navigate complexity, put patients at ease,
From chronic conditions to intricate care,
You bring deep commitment and skills beyond compare.

To Value-Based Care, where the whole person’s the plan —
Population Health and Transitional Care Management’s span —
From here to home, you bridge every gap,
Making sure no one ever falls off the map.

To Central Intake and Coding, the unsung heroes here,
You make sure that the story of care rings out clear,
Your diligence behind the scenes powers the whole —
Great documentation is the heart of your role.

To ASC nurses, precise and prepared,
At Urgent Care and Workplace Health, no detail is spared.

To Clinical Operations — education, quality, risk —
You keep care moving forward so nothing goes amiss.

But beyond every chart, every call, every task,
You give patients the courage to question and ask.

You teach them and reach them in hallways and homes,
Through texts, calls and portals, wherever care roams.

You notice the moments when something is wrong,
You advocate fiercely and cheer patients along.

You are more than your titles, more than your shifts,
You are healers and teachers and everyday gifts.

So here’s to our nurses, in every domain,
Who pour out their passion again and again.

At InterMed, our promise was never in doubt:
Care without Compromise — and you’re what that’s about.

Thank you. Truly. All of you.

— Roger Poitras, DHA, CEO, InterMed
— Emily Tolman, RN, MSN, Director of Clinical Care Transformation, InterMed

From: Mary La Rochelle

Sam is an ICU nurse, so he sees and cares for the sickest patients.

He is very confident, calm and appears laid-back when providing care. Putting the patient at ease, not casting judgment, which for a patient can mean so much. (And patients and their families are not always nice, making this job much harder.)

Sam is there 100%, providing the best care and ensuring his patients have what they need.

To: Jennifer McKinney at D’Youville Pavilion, Lewiston

From: Sandy Nichols

We were blessed to have Jen ( or, Honeybunny, our nickname for her) taking care of my husband, Jerry, on three different occasions at D’Youville.

She approaches her profession like it’s her first day. She is caring, efficient, friendly, always with a smile and you can tell she is for real. By our third visit, we were friends and we had totally fallen in love with her. She made us laugh, knew instinctively when he was in pain, or feeling down and was having a bad day. Jen would sit with us, talk and give us hugs. She was very professional yet had so much empathy for the difficulty Jerry and I had dealing with his illness. She walked into the room and she always had a smile, twinkling blue eyes and invisible wings! She made his life easier. She left to go home to Tennessee for the holidays and we exchanged phone numbers. She asked for updates on Jerry. She had returned to D’Youville shortly before he passed. I so appreciated Jen and her husband attending his memorial service!

Nurses like Jen are like finding gold at the end of the rainbow. She is the epitome of the nursing profession and we are eternally grateful.

We love you, Jen

The Nichols

To: Ashley DeGuzman at Maine Medical Center

To: Jayme Gervais at Central Maine Medical Center

From: Sue Rossignol

I have so much respect for all nurses. Most are kind, caring and focused on helping their patients and families..

I believe they are such an important piece of our healthcare system — an extension of the providers they assist.

Oftentimes, they are the ones the providers rely on to keep them informed in regards to how their patients are progressing.

Jayme is such a nurse. Her patients and staff are her priority.

As a leader in the endoscopy department, she makes sure the needs of her patients as well as the staff are met.

If the department is short-staffed, she will leave her office and work on the floor as part of the team to make sure cases get done as needed.

Her patients, staff and family have always been her priority. It is a tough and stressful balancing act, but she is a dedicated nurse and does her best to prioritize what is most important on any given day.

She is beautiful inside and out, and I am so proud to be in her life.

CMMC is fortunate to have a nurse leader/manager that is so dedicated to her staff, the organization, patients and their families as well as her own family.

She is truly a shining star. She sets the bar high as an example for all nurses in the organization.

She has high expectations for her staff as well as herself and stands out as an outstanding extension of the providers she works with every day.
