Judith Adele (Field) Jones
WINSLOW – Judith Adele Jones, 88, passed away on April 27, 2026. She was born on March 22, 1938, in Oneida, New York, the daughter of James Gaylord Field and Ann Marie Swanson, and sister to James R. Field. She graduated from Oneida High School. While working as a nursing assistant at age 15, she discovered a passion for serving others. She went on to the Crouse Irving School of Nursing in Syracuse, where in 1959 she earned her R.N. degree.
During her career, Judy worked in many areas of nursing: public health, medical-surgical, staffing the Colby College health center, and later as an OB/GYN office nurse. Even later in life, she stayed connected to nursing, volunteering as an RN at Mid-Maine Medical Center.
Judy was an active and committed member of her community. She was deeply involved in Pleasant Street United Methodist Church for 61 years, where she taught Sunday School, served as a youth group leader, crafted for the annual Christmas fundraiser, sang in the choir, and helped with the food bank. She spent years as a Cub Scout leader and gave her time to organizations such as the Mid-Maine Medical Center Auxiliary Board and the Sunset Boarding Home Board, where she served for over a decade. She valued the friendships and connections she built through her participation.
Judy had a fascination for the Southwest and Native American art, which began while living in Albuquerque, New Mexico, with her first husband, Richard R. Dole, M.D. They moved to Waterville in 1964. For a number of years, she raised her four children as a single mother, managing both work and home with determination, creativity, and care. In 1984, she married Dr. Paul A. Jones, with whom she shared 42 memorable years.
In retirement, Judy and Paul enjoyed traveling across the United States in their RV, visiting National Parks and their children, who were scattered throughout New England, Michigan, Georgia, and California. They also traveled as far as South Africa, Ireland, Sweden, and Australia. Some of their most treasured memories were made during sailing trips along the Maine coast with their dear friends, Dr. Lee and Linda Guite. Together, they enjoyed tennis, reading, playing bridge, attending church, dancing, and following the Red Sox.
Judy was an avid crafter and gift-giver. She enjoyed tole art, doll making, oil and watercolor painting, sewing, knitting, and rug hooking. She liked to keep busy, whether working on a project, tending to her flower garden, or preparing a welcoming meal. She benefited from her loving relationships with animals, most notably her horse, dogs, and feline friends. Judy cherished over 35 years of friendship through participating in an annual Christmas cookie and ornament exchange.
Family was always at the center of Judy’s life. She was devoted to her children, stepchildren, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and she made a point of staying connected with them. She took great pride in seeing her family grow, and she remained closely tied to each of them.
Judy is survived by her husband, Paul A. Jones, and her children: Lisa Marie Skinner and her husband, Vincent Skinner; Sharon Dole Hamilton and her husband, Scott Hamilton; David Dole; and Jonathan Dole and his wife, Camille Bossenberry. She is also survived by her stepchildren: Christopher Jones and his wife, Cheri Wing-Jones; Barbara Jones Maness and her husband, Timothy Maness; Susan Jones-Burr and her husband, Gregory Burr; Douglas Jones and his wife, Debra Jones; and Jennifer Jones and her husband, Ricardo Gonzales, along with 20 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. Judy was predeceased by her stepson, Paul Adams Jones III.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 1, at 2 p.m., at Pleasant Street United Methodist Church in Waterville.
