Five teenagers are facing charges in connection with a string of reported break-ins in Madison on Sunday, according to the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded Sunday to multiple reports of motor vehicle break-ins and two reports of homes with broken windows, the sheriff’s office said in a Facebook post Thursday. Police believed initially that minors had done the damage.
Deputy Michael Pike, who is school resource officer for Maine School Administrative District 59 in Madison, identified the teenagers after following up on the investigation Monday, the sheriff’s office said.
Pike charged the five, ranging in age from 13 to 16, with burglary, theft, burglary of a motor vehicle and criminal mischief. Their names were not released as most information about juvenile criminal proceedings is confidential in Maine.
A juvenile community corrections officer and the Somerset County district attorney’s office will review the case, the sheriff’s office said.
The investigation is ongoing, and Sheriff Dale Lancaster asked Madison residents who believe their vehicle may have been broken into to contact the sheriff’s office at 207-474-6386 to make a report.
