Martin’s Point is a not-for-profit health insurance plan, the only nonprofit Medicare Advantage plan in Maine. Hello? Are people listening? This is important, because there has been scant coverage of Martin’s Point’s not-for-profit status reported in Maine newspapers so far.

Moving on, there is the question of why InterMed decided to drop Martin’s Point Medicare Advantage plans starting in 2027. Why did InterMed do this? No explanation. Oh, yes, InterMed management made a statement indicating that it was a cost issue. But why were costs an issue with Martin’s Point and none of the other for-profit insurers?

Here’s a possible answer: because it had nothing to do with costs. It had to do with Martin’s Point’s network of having its own physicians and care providers that InterMed came to see as some sort of competition.

Is anyone going to step forward to put a stop to this nonsense? Per your newspaper, 4,500 people stand to lose their primary care providers.
