Robert B. Acheson

AUGUSTA – Robert B. Acheson passed away peacefully at the Maine Veteran’s Home in Augusta on May 15, 2026, after a week of visits from family and friends.

The son of James M. and Mary (Petrov) Acheson, Bob was born in Augusta Dec. 19, 1944 and lived there until his teens when the family moved to Hallowell. He graduated from Berwick Academy, Maine, and later painted and donated to the school a portrait of headmaster Al Kerr, whom he greatly admired.

Bob was a talented artist from a young age. His education at the Rhode Island School of Design was interrupted by his tour in the Navy. He graduated in 1970 with a BFA in illustration. Bob painted throughout his life and sold a number of pieces. He was especially proud of a portrait of Margaret Chase Smith which he donated to be hung at the State House in Augusta. Every year he created a new and beautiful Christmas card which his extensive network of friends and family looked forward to receiving.

Along with his artistic gifts, Bob was a talented storyteller, writer, musician and all-around lover of life. A major film buff, he embraced every new video medium that came out: from laser disks to VHS tapes to DVDs.

Bob worked at the Boise paper mill in Rumford (now ND paper) for over 20 years. He was an active member of the Seventh Day Adventist churches in Dixfield and Farmingdale.

Although he battled the debilitating effects of Parkinson’s disease for over a decade, Bob was never resentful or bitter. Rather, he chose to savor those sweet, everyday moments that we often overlook: the light on trees, the unique shape of a cloud, a child’s laugh, or a great story.

Bob was predeceased by his parents; brothers James, Thomas, and Richard and sister Joan Bridge. He is survived by his brother William and wife Peg of Gardiner, sisters-in-law Ann of Portland and Marjorie of Thomaston; many nieces and nephews; grand nieces and nephews; and great-grand nieces and nephews.

The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the staff at the Maine Veteran’s Home for the loving care they gave Bob over the past nine plus years, both physically and through enriching activities that meant so much to him.

Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, May 26 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta, ME 04330. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, May 27 at 10 a.m. also at Plummer Funeral Home, followed by private interment at the Hallowell Cemetery.
