I am writing to voice my family’s concern about the removal of a vital service in our community. Recently we were informed that toenail care would no longer be offered at MaineHealth Primary Care. To continue availing of this service, our 98-year-old mother would have to travel to the MaineHealth Miles Campus in Damariscotta.

This program has been provided locally for years and is critical to our family’s wellness plan for our mother. We would like to know the reasoning behind discontinuing this vital program.

Proper toenail care is a key aspect of preventive healthcare for seniors, allowing them to maintain their mobility and prevent infection. Appointments allow staff to monitor circulation issues and diabetes complications that can lead to serious foot injuries. Regular maintenance ensures comfort and independence, something that we Mainers take great pride in — the ability to age at home.

It should have also been taken into consideration that long travel times are difficult for an aging population. Navigating the MaineHealth Miles Campus is challenging for elderly patients. In addition, many of our older neighbors don’t drive and don’t have family living nearby to help them.

Toenail appointments are critical to seniors’ well-being in our community. We implore MaineHealth’s leadership to rethink this decision and reinstate this crucial medical service to the patients who attend MaineHealth’s primary care in Boothbay Harbor.
