Bernard Joseph Wisda
RICHMOND – Bernard Joseph Wisda of Richmond, Maine, passed peacefully, at the age of 91, at home and surrounded by family on May 13, 2026.
He was born on August 20, 1934 in Wilburton, Pa. to Joseph Andrew Wisda and Audrey Beatrice Karver. After graduating from high school in 1952, Bernard served four years in the Navy, trading assignments with another serviceperson to be stationed at Brunswick Naval Air Station, to fulfill a longtime dream of living in Maine. After honorable discharge from the Navy, he continued his career as a civil servant for the Department of Defense at BNAS as an electronic technician, retiring in 1990, at age 56.
Bernard married Mertie Geraldine Vieira on Feb. 23, 1957 and after a short stint in Utica, NY, they moved back to Richmond, where they raised two daughters, Patricia and Carole.
He was an avid outdoorsman, teaching his daughters his love of hunting, fishing, and trap/skeet shooting. He was a lifetime member of the Wilburton, Pa. Fire Department, American Legion, Richmond Sportsman Association, Sportsman Alliance of Maine, and Richmond Snowmobile Club.
Bernard is survived by his wife of 69 years, Mertie; his daughters Pat and Carole; his sister Shirley; ten grandchildren: Richelle, Eric, Kendelyn, Megan, Joseph, Hayden, Rhyse, Merideth, Ellegra and Hayley; and many nieces and nephews.
The family thanks Mid-Coast Hospital and CHANS Hospice and caregivers for their compassion and care.
