Maine is in “dire financial straits” and needs to grow, according to Dr. Nirav Shah, who’s campaigning for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination. That is the only way to take care of Mainers who need affordable housing and affordable healthcare, because the Center for Equal Justice reports that 70,000 of us experience extreme poverty.

Some 35,000 children live in households with income of less than $12,000 annually. National Public Radio reported that Maine had one of the slowest economic growth rates in the country last year.

Dr. Shah stresses the importance of helping small businesses to further develop the economy, as well as fixing our social problems so that corporations will find qualified workers and move here.
