William “Bill” Cleveland Whitley

VASSALBORO – William “Bill” Cleveland Whitley, 82, passed peacefully with his family by his side, May 3, 2026.

He was born in Alexandria, La. on Sept. 18, 1943, son of Wilbur and Madlyn (Bell) Whitley on the base of Alexandria Army Air Base, moving back to South Paris, Maine when Bill was a young boy.

Bill attended school in South Paris and graduated from Norway High School in 1961, and served four years in the United States Army, with his career starting at Fort Bragg in Fayetteville, N.C. in 1966 and ending in St. Louis, Mo. in 1969. He then graduated from the University of Portland-Gorham with a degree in Accounting/Finance.

Bill’s career entailed more than 35 years in healthcare financial and administrative roles in the Waterville and Camden/Rockport areas. He also served on the board of Delta Ambulance for 25 years and the board of the Town of Vassalboro. He retired from the State of Maine.

Bill always wanted to be known best for his love and devotion to his family and friends, especially the love of his life, Judith (Gilley) Whitley. They were married for 59 years prior to her passing on July 9, 2025. He was predeceased by his parents; and two brothers, Robert and Charlie Whitley.

Bill leaves behind his four children, Jeffrey and wife Jane of Augusta, Brian and fiancé Stacie of Seekonk, Mass., Kevin and wife Jen of Londonderry, N.H., and daughter Jennifer, and husband Chris of Portland; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life will be held June 6 at Vista of Maine in Greene from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Lunch will be served at 2 p.m. and words of remembrance at 1:30 p.m. Arrangements and guidance are under the direction of Veilleux Funeral Home in Waterville.
