UNITY – Thomas C. Berry, 87, passed away April 20, 2026, at Togus VA Hospital after a years-long battle with mesothelioma.
Tom was born in Belfast, Maine, Aug. 18, 1938. Tom graduated from Freedom Academy, Freedom, Maine, and served in the U.S. Army for three years as a heavy equipment repair trainer at Fort Belvoir, Va.
Tom had a long career as a heavy equipment and marine mechanic. The highlight of his career was the several years he spent in Alaska working on construction of the Alaska Pipeline. Tom was still in contact with several friends with whom he worked on that project. Tom was particularly adept at field-expedient repair.
Tom was an avid outdoorsman and hunter. He had a natural talent for helping young people who were living in difficult circumstances.
Tom will be sorely missed by family members and friends.
Survivors include his daughter, D’Anna Jensen of Rockville, Md., son, Thomas C. Berry, Jr. of El Paso, Texas, daughter, Carlista (Kelly) Heaberlin of Newport, stepson, Jared Palmer of Hampden; special friend, Maghen Wilcox of Windham; and brother, Cedric Berry of Thorndike.
There will be a private celebration of Tom’s life for family and friends in late June.
