Fueled by a second-place finish from its first varsity eight boat, the Bates College’s women’s rowing team took second place overall behind Tufts at the NCAA Division III national championships Friday in Gainesville, Georgia.
The regatta was condensed from two days to one because of weather, meaning all teams had to race twice Friday. The Bobcats won their morning heat in the first varsity eight division, then finished second to Tufts in the grand final with a time of 6 minutes, 31.572 seconds — four seconds behind the Jumbos.
Tufts also won the second varsity eight final, while Bates took fifth in 6:50.064.
With 37 points from the first varsity eight and eight points from the second varsity eight, Bates edged William Smith by one point for the runner-up position.
Tufts became the first team to win three straight NCAA championships since Bates won four in a row from 2017-21. The Bobcats were seeking their sixth NCAA title.
