Imelda Yorkus

AUGUSTA – On Saturday, May 23, 2026, after just celebrating her 99th birthday on April 30, 2026, Imelda Yorkus passed peacefully on into the loving arms of her Lord.

Imelda was born in Nutley, N.J., to parents Willis and Loretta (Dolan) Armstrong. She was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Paterson, N.J., and went on to further her education at Saint Joseph Hospital in Paterson, N.J., where she received her degree in nursing.

Her career as a nurse began at the VA Hospital Massachusetts and continued on at the VA Hospital in New Jersey. Ultimately, most of her career was spent at the VA Togus Medical Center in Maine where she retired.

On Nov. 15, 1952 she married Peter Yorkus and the two lived in southern Vermont before moving to the homestead on Vigue Road in Whitefield. Together she and Peter engaged in many activities, ranging from her gardens (both vegetable and flower), farm animals, firewood processing, hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, camping, and whatever else they wanted to do. Her life was full.

Shortly after moving to Whitefield, they got involved in a variety of organizations in the area including Lions Club and St. Denis Catholic Church. Imelda took on many roles at the church including Eucharistic Minister, Lector, head of the Worship and Spirituality Commission, trainer of altar servers (including annual picnics “out to camp” on Dam Pond in Augusta) and was a member of the Parish Council. She remained a parishioner at St. Denis for the rest of her life, attending her last Mass there on Sunday, May 10, 2026. She always considered it her home.

After Peter’s passing in 2008, Imelda worked to clean out their home, eventually selling it and moving to the camp on Dam Pond. In the fall of 2023, Imelda made her last move, to the Maine Veterans Home in Augusta. While not something that fit with her independent nature, she knew it was needed. Again, she quickly made a host of new friends and continued to get into mischief whenever she could. She enjoyed getting out for her blueberry pancake breakfasts at AHOP and Priscilla’s right to the end.

She was predeceased by her siblings Edna, Raymond, Bill, and Joan.

She is survived by her brother, Kenneth Armstrong (95), and sister, Dorothy (91); as well as many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her “nephew who grew in her heart” Joey Boltzer and his wife Janet.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, June 4 at 10 a.m., at St. Denis Catholic Church, 298 Grand Army Rd., Whitefield, ME 04353. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Whitefield. Arrangements have been entrusted to Plummer Funeral Home, 983 Ridge Rd., Windsor, ME 04363.
