Maine doesn’t have to do this. The primary hasn’t happened yet, there’s no reason we, as a state, have to be shackled to Platner. As of writing this, his statements about self-pleasuring in public toilets are in the news. A person shouldn’t have to work so hard to discuss a Senate candidate in words a newspaper will print.

There are still two good non-Platner candidates running, Andrea LaFlamme as a write-in and David Costello. If Janet Mills won the nomination she’d probably get back in too. The ranking ballot gives us options; vote/write in anyone but Platner.

If he wins the nomination, a write-in option is still available. Anyone could be written in, Chellie Pingrie, Stephen King, Troy Jackson, Jared Golden. With the ranking system there’s a chance to run a write-in that can compete without being a spoiler.

Maine doesn’t have to do this.
