Leroy A. McCarty
SKOWHEGAN – It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our loving dad, Grampy, brother, uncle, and father-in-law. Leroy A. McCarty passed away on May 29, 2026, surrounded by his family.
Leroy A. McCarty was born in Solon, Maine, on March 13, 1935. He was 91 years old when the Lord called him home. He was the son of David and Hazel McCarty of South Solon, Maine.
Leroy married Donna L. Huff on Nov. 19, 1960. They were married for 65 glorious years. They lived most of their lives in South Solon, where they raised their five children.
He was the best mechanic and could fix anything. Right out of high school, Friends Ford Motor Sales hired him, and his career took off.
He once told the story of trading for a car motor, not knowing it was in a box in pieces. He had no books and nothing to go by. His dad told him to make it run, and Leroy worked nonstop on it. Some days it was so cold that he had to stop to warm up his hands, then he went right back at it. When the day came to see if all of his hard work had paid off, he started the motor on the first try. His dad knew then that Leroy had found his destiny as a mechanic — and, in our opinion, the best mechanic ever.
He also worked as a lumberjack, cutting trees, with his wife, Donna, operating the skidder. They always worked together as a team.
Leroy enjoyed visits from his family and friends, cookouts, BBQs, camping, and his favorite peanut butter cups for dessert.
Leroy is survived by his wife, Donna McCarty of South Solon; his children, Kevin McCarty and his wife Doreen of Lexington, Linda Rairdon and her husband Danny of Skowhegan, Tony McCarty of South Solon.
Leroy is also survived by his sister, Beverly Grover of Madison, his brother, Lawrence “Sonny” McCarty of South Solon; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Leroy was predeceased by his son, Glen McCarty, his daughter, Beth McCarty; and his sisters, Lucille George, Florence Spaulding, and Arlene Foster.
He will be missed so much by so many. Until we meet again, we all love you very much.
A committal service will be held graveside at Evergreen Cemetery on the River Road in Solon, Maine, on June 20 at 2:00 p.m., followed by a BBQ at 347 Russell Road, Skowhegan, Maine. Please bring your own chairs.
