Vicki Lynn Nichols Laney

MADISON – Vicki Lynn Nichols Laney, 71, of Madison, formerly of Skowhegan, passed away peacefully May 30, 2026, with her family by her side after a long hard battle with MS (Multiple Sclerosis).

Vicki was born Sept. 15, 1954, in Skowhegan, the daughter of Irene Cumber and Earl Nichols. She was a proud graduate with honors of Skowhegan Area High School, class of 1973. Shortly after graduation,Vicki married the love of her life, Lew Laney. They built a family, homes, and a business together for 24 years. She devoted her life to many children at her in home daycare to be able to be a stay-at-home mom for Karie.

She did volunteer work for a lady’s group, Semper Fidelis, including treasurer. She also did volunteer work at Unity Racewayas a concession stand employee to cleaning to running the gate with Central Maine Racing Association as treasurer. In 1984 she worked in the business as co-owner of Lew’s Building Supplies in all aspects from office to warehouseuntil the store closed in 1992. Other employment was bank teller, shop-n-save bagger, and cleaning of a church.

Overtime, MS took her to a level of disability that did not enable her to work or drive any longer. In 2012 she was admitted to Winthrop Manor until its closing in 2016. At that time, placement was transitioned to Maplecrest Rehab and Living Center in Madison to be closer to her daughter where she resided through her final resting moment.

Vicki cherished crafts, sewing, cribbage, and her Baptist faith and especially being a proud grandma to her only grandson, Cody.

She is survived by her daughter, Karie Hardy and husband John; her grandson Cody Hardy; her brother Robert “Bob” Nichols and wife Kelly; along with her stepmother, step siblings, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

She was predeceased by her father Earl Nichols, mother Irene Cumber, brother Brent Nichols, and stepfather Rodney Cumber, along with grandparents and a step sibling.

Vicki will be remembered for her sense of humor, her spicy wittiness, her smiles, and most of all her strength and courage all while being endured through the horrid disease of MS.

Per her wishes, a public graveside will be held at 10 am on June 15, 2026, at Southside Cemetery in Skowhegan, Maine with pastor Glenn Peterson officiating.
