Nothing hits the spot quite like a tall, dark Guinness.

“Endurance” by Alfred Lansing, the remarkable story of Ernest Shackleton’s survival against impossible odds.

“Chariots of Fire,” with its unmatched inspiration in Eric Liddell’s story and its reminder of purpose and conviction.
What talent would you most like to have that you don’t have?
I wish I had my mother’s extraordinary talent of painting and teaching watercolors.

“No worries,” which I probably use even more than I realize.
What is your greatest extravagance?
I hate to admit it, but I just can’t resist buying old books — it’s a real weakness.

I know it sounds corny, but my collection of family photos is my greatest material treasure.

The World War II generation I grew up around, as well my mother, whose quiet strength and character shaped who I am.

The shadow of Mt. Katahdin around Patten, Maine, and the northern entrance to Baxter State Park. It’s home for me and still the place that grounds me the most.

Lemonade. I made a lot of friends in college by being the designated driver; I don’t drink alcohol.

I am a pretty regimented guy, being from the fitness, world so an extravagance for me is pretty simple. Aside from any family time, I really love to take about 1.5 hours each weekend morning to have coffee and read about a dozen publications.

I don’t have one specific person that comes to mind because there are so many different ways to be a hero, in my mind. But I gravitate towards anyone who truly puts others above themselves, from the smallest gesture to the ultimate sacrifice. And, of course my mom, dad and my wife.

My granddaddy King was a man of quiet integrity, the source for what I see in my father today. I’d add Teddy Roosevelt for being the man in the arena, Marcus Aurelius for his stoic wisdom and my mom, for gracefully handling three young boys, a full-time job and higher education. I’m not me without her.
