Winthrop voters approved a $15.6 million budget at the polls Tuesday, unofficial results show.
About 75% of voters approved of the budget. The town of Winthrop said 1,273 residents voted yes on the budget, while 425 voted against. A total of 1,730 voters participated in the election; 32 left their ballot blank.
Thebudget for the next fiscal year increases spending by about 5.4%, requiring an additional $301,805 from local taxpayers, or an increase of 3.28%.
In March, Winthrop Board of Education members approved the budget unanimously despite concerns over growing class sizes because they feared the Winthrop Town Council would likely reject a larger increase — especially considering that the current year’s budget was a 9% increase over the previous year, and a townwide property tax revaluation coming next year may increase the taxes of some property owners.
Theresa Violette, the principal at Winthrop Grade School, said a dozen new first-grade students have enrolled in Winthrop’s school since the beginning of the year, an unprecedented increase that she said caused difficulty for staff. Overall, the school’s enrollment has jumped 36 students this year.
The budget cuts the equivalent of 2.5 positions, Superintendent Becky Foley said.
“It’s not extravagant, it’s intentional,” Foley said in March. “It reflects what we believe is needed to bring our schools to the next level. Our students deserve nothing less and with your support we can give them the future they deserve.
