Out in western Maine, this tourist destination offers a throwback version of summer, marked by wilderness adventures and the amenities of a quaint downtown. Whether you’re paddling in the lake or overlooking it from a patio, the point is to be outside as much as possible. Here’s how to make the most of a weekend getaway in the region.

Day 1

7 p.m. – After a long drive, head right to dinner at Portage Tap House (74 Carry Road) in Oquossoc for pub food, pizza and craft beer.

8:30 p.m. – Unwind with a round of bowling at Moose Alley (2809 Main St.) in Rangeley, loosening up your muscles for an active day ahead — just make sure not to pull anything.

Day 2

6 a.m. – Grab a breakfast sandwich and coffee at the locally beloved Oquossoc Grocery (75 Carry Road), aka The O.G., along with any snacks or beverages you’ll need for a hike.

11 a.m. – Return in time for the hour-long historic Rangeley walking tour on Saturdays, leaving from the Rangeley History Museum, or visit the museum and take a self-guided stroll around town.

12:30 p.m. – Have lunch on the back deck of Parkside & Main (2520 Main St.) in downtown Rangeley, overlooking the lake.

2 p.m. – Rent kayaks from River’s Edge Sports (38 Carry Road) and launch right from the store’s dock onto Rangeley Lake for a paddle.

5:30 p.m. – Make a reservation for an early dinner at the Loon Lodge Inn restaurant (16 Pickford Road) if you can, or enjoy its menu of New American cuisine in the first-come, first-served Pickford Pub.

7 p.m. – Make it down to the Lakeside Theater (2493 Main St.) for whatever show or movie Rangeley Friends of the Arts is offering that night.

Day 3

7 a.m. – Get a coffee and breakfast to go from The Rangeley Hideaway (2419 Main St.), then plug Height of Land into your GPS, so on the way out of town, you can pull over and take in the view one last time.
