A 30-year-old Madison man is facing charges in connection with a break-in at Main Street Middle School in Madison reported early Tuesday morning.

The man was being held in jail as of Thursday on Class C, felony-level charges of burglary, aggravated criminal mischief and theft by unauthorized taking or transfer, Somerset County Sheriff Dale Lancaster said in a statement.

Deputy Mike Pike of the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office, who is the school resource officer for Madison schools, was notified of the burglary around 6:30 a.m. and found the school had been broken into through a classroom window, Lancaster said.

The window was damaged and several items were missing, he said.

Detective David Cole and Deputy Adam Estabrook identified a suspect and spoke with him later Tuesday morning, Lancaster said.

The suspect admitted to breaking into the school and police recovered most of the property reported missing police records show.

Lancaster did not specify what items had been reported stolen. Prosecutors alleged in a court filing the school property had a value of more than $1,000, and damage to the classroom window exceeded $2,000. An affidavit supporting probable cause for the man’s arrest was not available from the court Thursday.

His bail was set at $250 unsecured with the condition that he be supervised under the Somerset County Community Corrections Program, Lancaster said. He was being held at the Somerset County Jail in Madison as of Thursday morning.

As the charges are felony-level, prosecutors must first take the case to the grand jury to seek an indictment before the man is asked to enter pleas.

He is due back in court in Skowhegan on Aug. 5, the sheriff said.
