A 10-year-old boy is safe after officials from multiple agencies swiftly rescued him from the Androscoggin River in Turner Saturday night.

Just after 8:15 p.m., the Androscoggin Regional Communications Center received a call about the boy, who had entered the fast-flowing river near Hawes Corner Road. The boy’s father informed the dispatcher that his son had been swept by the current, and was stranded on a cluster of rocks in the middle of the river.

Deputies responded immediately and instructed the boy to stay still while the Turner Fire and Rescue department and Greene Fire Department began a water rescue. Livermore Fire Department also responded to the scene.

Lt. Cameron Lebel and Firefighter Chris Bellefleur − both from Turner Fire and Rescue − led the rescue. Lebel successfully navigated the current using Greene Fire Department’s rescue boat, secured the child and brought him back safely to shore where Turner Rescue officials determined he was uninjured.

The Androscoggin County Sherriff’s Office thanked officials for their swift response and urged caution around public rivers, reminding people that they can quickly become dangerous, despite appearing calm.
